Boston Handmade was founded in March 2007 by artist Jessica Burko. The interest in developing the group was to gather local Boston area artists, craftspeople, and artisans who were actively engaged in selling their handmade work on Etsy.com, a web site dedicated to the handmade life. Gathering like minded, independent, creative people to work together towards reaching their common professional and artistic goals was the original driving force behind the idea of Boston Handmade and continues to be the focus of the group. Operating a bit like a guild, Boston Handmade is an organization of people with related interests and goals, gathered to support one another and to maintain the interests of group members.
All group members write articles for the Boston Handmade blog and participate in organizing group activities like skill-share workshops, social/networking gatherings, art fair/craft shows. Members of Boston Handmade are juried into the group by all current members. Any Etsy seller in Massachusetts is welcome to be a part of this Boston based group as long as they are willing to participate – we don't believe in having members in name only. Many of the group meetings are held in the South End, and activities, gatherings, and group shows are primarily held in the greater Boston area.
Many members of Boston Handmade participate in the South End, Mashpee, and Providence Open Markets, as well as the First Thursdays Art Walks in Jamaica Plains.
